The month of February sees the release of RUTH's second single, Fear of Flying - one
of the band's oldest songs.
This follows their debut single, I don't know which was released last year and catapulted
RUTH from total obscurity to a vague sort of "oh yeah, I've heard of them sort of".
I don't know was always intended as an ice breaker and as such it was very successful,
attracting an prodigious amount of high profile TV (largely due to it's preposterous video
directed by strange young man Edgar "You guys are crazy" Wright) and the undying
affection of Talk Radio as well as picking up some very favourable notices, particularly
in music industry trade magazine Tipsheet who said "I don't know is a very very good record".
There were, of course, some dissenting voices, notably those of top actor-turned
singers-of-dodgy-old-songs-to-universal-detestation (not counting the millions of
people who bought their records), Robson and Jerome who said "Bless them",
"That vid cost a lot of money didn't it!" and "No no no I wasn't up for that". The band
took some comfort from lovely Sean Maguire's assertion that it was "the real band music"
and from the other one out of Robson and Jerome blathering on about "play that ten years ago".
We did get the Twix Teaser on the Chart Show, though.
I don't know achieved modest sales from selected outlets only - largely due to it's failure
to get support from big radio (although it was very popular on Lantern Radio, Devon
apparently). The campaign for Fear of flying is particularly concerned with getting on the radio.
Fear of flying once again teams up producers RUTH with mixer Alan Winstanley to
form a congealed mass of sheer power pop piles, and stupid fools RUTH performing
in another of stupid fool Edgar Wright's videos.
For further details, see the Fear of Flying feature and the following item on the video.
Don't neglect to order your copy or to go on and on and on to your friends about it.
