DOING THE VIDEO FOR FEAR OF FLYING
by someone who was actually there
Hello - Matt the singer from out of RUTH here at my personal computer terminal. You may be interested to know that this piece is being written using a revolutionary new man/machine interface called HeadReader that has just come out. It connects me direct to my computer via some holes in my skull and thus removes all that frustrating typing and risk of repetitive strain injury.
The model I'm using at the moment is a relatively rough prototype and the holes in my head are thus quite big and I'm not sure I shall ever be able to go out in public again because of the scars and the new shape of my face but the point is that it seems to work and my friend who made it has offered me 5% of any money he makes which could be as much as five million pounds, and you can't stop progress. And even if you can you really shouldn't because it might turn out to be a cure for cancer or a new type of coating for frying pans.
One of the interesting effects of using HeadReader is that as well as all the stuff you actually want to write, you can get all those tangents and incongruities that flit through my opened ears inciting and inviting me. Oops.
Anyway, in December me and my friends who are in some band went somewhere cold in north London and filmed a video for our song called Fear of Flying. It took two days and involved an alarming number of people doing stuff that I don't know about. It also involved alarming a number of people I don't know. We've got a new alarm at our house.
Can't seem to keep my mind on what I'm supposed to be doing. I'll try one of HeadReader's other features. This one called "Cumings" filters the input from my human brain and leaves only nouns, adverbs and adjectives. Here goes:
Lycra Shops Capes Fancy Dress Stress.
Flu Sad Boys Cars Insomnia Tea.
Morning Cold Cold Silver Stairs Shivering Shits.
Trampolines Whistling Winds Capes Cut.
Turnover Speed Action Cold Cut.
Pizza.
Hmmm. Not sure about that at all. Comes out like a dodgy Haiku. Still, kind of covers the first days filming. Especially "Turnover Speed Action Cold Cut".
If you like you can have your own Fear of Flying video shoot experience by simply taking your clothes off and standing at a bus-stop pulling strange faces on the coldest day of the year.
As the day wore on I found myself thinking - "Who's fault is this?" again and again. Unfortunately, as doing a superheroes video was my idea it was my fault. Heigh ho. [It was my idea, actually - Ed]
Edgar the director kept telling me that it was going to look great and that soon there would be loads of pizza because we had told Pizza Hut that we weren't doing a video for RUTH but an advert for Pizza Hut.
Well, the video does look great and in fact the shot that hurt the most - RUTH FORCE running in slow motion down a water strewn corridor while the camera goes upside down- is the best shot of all. But the pizzas were cold and there were only three of them. So Edgar should stick to what he knows and shut up about food. OK?
Then we went home to bed. But crucially not to sleep.
Day Two was warmer because it was inside and we didn't have to wear our superhero suits quite as much. Instead we wore our special Seventies Kids costumes which were a lot more comfortable and less cape-y.
I just fancy trying Another great feature on HeadReader called "As-It-Happens mode". This processes memories and prints them out as an interior monologue in present tense. Sounds cool.......
"Action.
I am a dancer. I am one with the music. I am whirling and flashing with sound and light. I am a voice. I open wide and out comes the nothing that is myself. And I am something. I see red and yellow. I see pink. All around me is the rhythm of life of death of beginnings of endings. I am the cycle and part of the cycle. I am yours. I dangle on your cord. You feed me and I need you but now I am launched free. I see red and yellow. I see pink. I see bright white light. I am a dancer. I am one.
Cut"
Er. I think I accidentally described my birth there.
That's the problem with this thing. Still, it covers the second day of the shoot pretty well.
So we did it and it was cool and tiring and we did it and it turns out it looks fabulous and it will be on telly soon and we did it.
Then we went home to bed.
Single number two coming soon
I saw RUTH play live
